As a dentist, friend and advisor to my patients, I have found that I have a wonderful opportunity to share ideas with them. I am verbose, knowledgeable and opinionated, passionate, curious, and finally pretty amusing to my guests (patients). I have learned to be a good listener as well as a talker.

Pearl Street Dental believes that patients should advocate for themselves and ask questions. The internet is a tremendous fact checking tool….please use it.

Nutrition. I think it’s incredibly obvious that we all should “run good fuel”. That is, eat good food, whole unprocessed foods. Fruits and vegetables and the less animal protein the better. I am not talking about being a zealot, just balance and common sense. Our obesity rate is over 50% as a nation, it doesn't have to be that way.

Education and common sense are the keys to good health. Junk food should be eliminated. Genetically modified (GM) food should be avoided; and please, please, please….don’t consume poisons such as aspartame (phenlyketourics) most chewing gums, diet drinks, even those accepted by the American Dental Association (ADA). Don't consume high fructose corn syrup and accept poor hydration for yourself. Clean pure water is essential.

Folks, the cat is way out of the bag on some of this stuff. How aspartame is still on the market I think demonstrates beyond any reasonable doubt that agencies like the FDA are completely self serving and dysfunctional. Marketing, money and a bunch of jive is still telling people that crap is good for you and will make you feel good. If nutrition is important at all, which it is….it IS the key to health. Staying OUT of the “health care system” is more important than ever. Eat great food, take a small amounts of nutritional supplements, drink clean, pure water and brush your teeth and look…we can be friends!

Here are some of my general philosophies and practice protocols. Continuing Education is Key! I found that staying curious and engaged in my profession that the quote “half of everything you think you know is wrong” is very important with regard to dentistry and life in general.

We at Pearl Street Dental are a mercury free dental practice. Heavy metals should be avoided, not stored in the mouth…..it’s really quite simple. The “debate” that rages with regard to alloy fillings is not a debate here. Stuck on stupid does not work for me no matter who is selling the idea….ie ADA, FDA, CDC or the AMA.

Again the fact that Aspartame, mercury fillings and genetically modified foods are available everywhere from chewing gum, diet drinks and so many other “sugar free” “foods” let’s me know, and our critically thinking patients that these agencies are not doing their jobs. We have to advocate for ourselves and study via the Internet information that can help or keep us from harm.

Flu vaccines are another soap box issue…..please, find out what is being injected into your families bodies and what the odds are of it being effective. Find out about the cost benefits of inoculations vs increasing your vitamin D intake, cutting out toxins and lousy nutrition and adding a few balanced supplements may be. Perhaps there is an excellent way to stay healthy instead of just treating diseases. Maybe the paradigm that we in the USA are subjecting ourselves to is not the right one. Critical Thinking and Education are the door openers to best health…..not dogma.

I have taken Fluoride out of my water supply at the office as well as my home. At this point in my career and life, I am more concerned about good diet, clean, pure water and an electric toothbrush and floss. I think municipal fluoride does more harm than good and I don’t think the municipalities that dump this waste product from the fertilizer industry into our water supply are actually looking out for our best interests.

Visit this website if you would like to know more about the Fluoride Action Network.

Each patient should exercise their own due diligence with regards to these issues.

That's all for now, but there is so much more. Regards. Dr. Elliott B Higgins
