Preventative Dentistry: Your Roadmap to Long-Lasting Oral Health

Preventive dentistry is key for maintaining healthy teeth and gums for a lifetime. It's a proactive approach to dental care, aimed at preventing the onset of oral diseases or catching them in their early stages when they're easiest to treat.  It includes regular dentist visits for check-ups, cleanings, and various treatments intended to prevent problems like tooth decay, gum disease, enamel wear, and more.

At Pearl Street Dental in Boulder, we firmly believe that prevention is better than treatment - especially when it comes to your oral health. That's why we suggest that if it's been more than 6 months since your last dental visit, we encourage you to make an appointment.

Looking for a dentist in Boulder? Pearl Street Dental is accepting new patients and we look forward to meeting you!

Dr. Moynier is amazing! I would give him 10 stars if that was an option! I was in Boulder on vacation from Texas and had a dental emergency. He immediately called me back willing to help and met me at his office on a Sunday. He was not only kind and sympathetic, he was such a perfectionist and did an amazing job! He charged me such a fair amount to help me and I will forever be grateful to him! I highly recommend him and his sweet staff that followed up with me!

Dental checkups

Receiving regular dental checkups are the backbone of preventive dentistry. They are an essential part of oral health maintenance and should ideally take place every six months, although the frequency can vary depending on one's individual dental health condition. During these checkups, the dentist will examine your teeth, gums, jaw, and mouth to detect any signs of oral health issues. They are the opportune moments for early detection and treatment of problems like cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and tooth loss.

Dental Checkups

Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays provide a detailed image of your mouth, enabling your dentist to identify hidden dental issues that might not be evident during a standard oral examination. X-rays can be integral in identifying cavities between teeth, assessing gum health, checking dental implant viability, determining the status of growing teeth, and spotting tumors or cysts. Essentially, a dental X-ray fills in the gaps, helps remove the guesswork, and offers a complete picture of your dental health.

Professional Dental Cleanings

Professional dental cleanings complement regular oral hygiene practices like brushing and flossing. Performed by a hygienist, a dental cleaning session involves steps that you cannot perform at home. It includes the removal of dental plaque and tartar using a process known as scaling. Once the teeth are clean, they are polished to remove additional stains and plaque. Lastly, the teeth are flossed to ensure the areas between the teeth are clean. These professional cleanings are a critical piece in preventive dentistry as they help to ward off cavities and gum disease.

Dental Cleanings

Periodontal Cleanings

Periodontal cleanings, otherwise known as deep cleanings, are often recommended by dentists as part of a preventative care plan for those who have, or are at risk of, developing gum disease. Compared to regular dental cleanings, periodontal cleanings go deeper, removing plaque and tartar formation below the gumline. This procedure, also known as scaling and root planing, helps to reduce inflammation and irritation caused by bacterial toxins, allowing the gums to heal and reattach themselves more firmly to the teeth.
