Oral Hygiene with Aligners: Essential Tips

One of the biggest advantages of clear aligners is that they're removable, but this benefit also comes with a responsibility. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene with aligners is crucial not just for your smile transformation but for your overall dental health throughout treatment. At Pearl Street Dental, Dr. Mark Moynier, DDS, and our team want to ensure you have all the tools and knowledge to keep your teeth and aligners in pristine condition.

Why Oral Hygiene Matters More During Aligner Treatment

When you wear clear aligners for 20–22 hours per day, your teeth are essentially covered most of the time. This creates an environment where bacteria can thrive if you're not diligent about cleaning. Food particles and plaque trapped between your teeth and aligners can lead to cavities, gum disease, and even that notorious "aligner breath" nobody wants to experience.

The Right Way to Brush With Clear Aligners

Brushing with clear aligners requires a slightly modified routine from your pre-treatment days:

  • Remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything (except water)
  • Brush your teeth after every meal before reinserting your aligners (yes, even after snacks!)
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to gently clean all tooth surfaces
  • Don't forget your tongue! Bacteria love to hide there, too
  • Wait at least 30 minutes after eating acidic foods before brushing to protect your enamel

We understand that brushing after every meal isn't always convenient, especially when you're at work or out in Boulder enjoying a meal on Pearl Street. Keep a travel toothbrush kit handy, or at minimum, rinse thoroughly with water before reinserting your aligners.

Mastering Flossing With Aligners

Flossing with aligners is non-negotiable. Since your aligners fit snugly against your teeth, any food particles or plaque between teeth can cause problems quickly. Here's how to make flossing a seamless part of your routine:

  • Floss at least once daily, preferably before bed
  • Use traditional floss, floss picks, or a water flosser; whatever works best for you
  • Be thorough! Get between every tooth and along the gumline
  • Consider flossing after meals when possible for optimal cleanliness

Caring for Your Aligners

Part of dental care during aligner treatment involves keeping the aligners themselves clean. Dirty aligners can harbor bacteria and cause discoloration:

  • Rinse aligners with lukewarm water every time you remove them
  • Brush your aligners gently with a soft toothbrush and clear, antibacterial soap
  • Avoid hot water since it can warp the plastic
  • Never eat or drink (except water) while wearing aligners
  • Soak aligners in denture cleaner or aligner cleaning crystals weekly for a deep clean
