Oral Hygiene With Clear Aligners: A Guide

Straightening your teeth with clear aligners is an exciting journey toward your dream smile, but it does require some adjustments to your daily routine. The good news? Maintaining excellent oral hygiene with aligners is actually easier than caring for traditional braces, and with the right habits, you can keep both your teeth and aligners in pristine condition throughout your treatment.

Why Oral Hygiene Matters More During Aligner Treatment

When you're wearing aligners for 20–22 hours per day, any food particles or bacteria on your teeth get trapped against your enamel. This creates the perfect environment for plaque buildup and potential cavities. That's why dental care during aligner treatment needs to be even more diligent than your pre-treatment routine. At Pearl Street Dental, we emphasize that healthy teeth move more predictably and comfortably, making your treatment more effective.

Brushing With Clear Aligners: The Essential Steps

Brushing with clear aligners requires a slightly modified approach to your regular routine:

  • Remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything except water
  • Brush your teeth after every meal or snack before reinserting your aligners
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Brush for a full two minutes, paying attention to all surfaces
  • If you can't brush immediately after eating, rinse thoroughly with water

We understand that brushing after every meal isn't always convenient, especially when you're at work or out with friends. Keep a travel toothbrush kit handy, or at a minimum, swish vigorously with water before putting your aligners back in.

Flossing With Aligners: Don't Skip This Step

Flossing with aligners is just as important as brushing, if not more so. Since your aligners cover your teeth completely, trapped food particles between teeth can cause serious problems. Make flossing a non-negotiable part of your daily routine, ideally after every meal, but at a minimum once per day.

Traditional string floss works great, but you might also consider:

  • Water flossers for quick, effective cleaning
  • Floss picks for convenience when you're on the go
  • Interdental brushes for larger gaps

Cleaning Your Aligners

Your aligners need regular cleaning, too! Rinse them every time you remove them, and brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and clear, antibacterial soap. Avoid using toothpaste on your aligners, as it can be abrasive and create tiny scratches that make them appear cloudy.

Building Your Aligner Care Routine

Dr. Mark Moynier, DDS, recommends creating a consistent routine that becomes second nature. Keep your aligner case with you always, store your aligners properly when eating, and never wrap them in a napkin (they often get accidentally thrown away!).

Staying committed to proper dental care during aligner treatment protects your investment in your smile. If you're considering clear aligners or have questions about maintaining your current treatment, our Boulder, CO, team is here to help.

Remember, the few extra minutes you spend on oral hygiene with aligners each day will pay off with a healthy, beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime.
